What you should know about skin cancer

In the last 3 decades the rate of skin cancer doubled according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). Skin cancer affects the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. It is an abnormal growth of cells caused by mutations which cause the skin cells to rapidly multiply, leading to tumors.

Causes

The main culprit that leads to the development of skin cancer are UV rays, whether from the sun or from tanning beds. If you’ve had five or more serious sunburns in your life, your risk of developing skin cancer doubles.

Types of skin cancer

Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are abnormal, uncontrolled growths that arise from the skin’s basal cells in the outermost layer of skin (epidermis). BCCs typically are found on the face, ears, neck, shoulders and back. Occasionally they can spread or metastasize, but they are rarely fatal.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising from the squamous cells in the outmost layer of skin (epidermis). These are also found in areas commonly exposed to the sun like the ears, face, scalp, neck and hands. SCCs can grow rapidly and metastasize if not found and treated early. Nearly 15,000 deaths occur from invasive SCC of the skin each year in the U.S.

Prevention

Avoid getting sunburned. Stay out of the sun whenever possible. If you must be in the sun, wear broad-spectrum, waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and protective clothing. In fact, it’s a great idea just to wear a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 any time you leave the house, any time of year. Avoid tanning beds.

When to see a doctor

If you notice a change in any mole or any new moles with uneven or asymmetrical edges, it’s time to visit your health care provider. Changes could include size, shape and color. The great news is that when it’s caught early, there’s a high chance that any carcinoma can be removed entirely. A great preventative measure is to schedule a full body mole check at least once a year.
